Asbestos Awareness Training

Any potential risks relating to asbestos exposure require careful control – and with good reason. Asbestos related diseases are responsible for around 5000 deaths each year in the UK. This is almost 3 times the number of road fatalities and the laws relating to asbestos reflect this.

The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2012 cover all manner of responsibilities and controls that must be in place, including asbestos management of non-domestic premises. Asbestos was finally banned in the UK on November of 1999. The significant problem remains that buildings (including refurbishments) prior to this may still contain asbestos. It is estimated that millions of tonnes of asbestos are still present in buildings throughout the UK.

Who is this course for?

Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2012 defines this as any worker who “is or is liable to be exposed to asbestos, or if that employee supervises such employees". In practice, this potentially covers a large range of occupations where asbestos could be disturbed (even accidentally) by actions arising from work. These are not limited to:

  • Construction site workers

  • On site joiners

  • Demolition / refurbishment workers

  • Installation engineers (telecoms, fire alarm/security, data)

  • Architects/building surveyors

  • Maintenance workers

  • Trades (electrical, plumbers, joiners, plasterers, painters and decorators)

  • Roofers

  • Heating and ventilation engineers

  • Gas fitters

Such information, instruction, training and supervision must cover 11 aspects relating to asbestos and be given at regular intervals to satisfy the regulatory requirements. There are additional requirements for workers who do disturb asbestos as part of the work (either non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed work) which can be covered as part of this course on request.

Course provision is by certified and qualified BOHS P402 trainers. A certificate of attendance will be issued on successful course completion.
