Private Healthcare Provider Fined for Exposing Workers to Chlorine Gas
A recent incident at The Hampshire Clinic, a private healthcare provider, has raised concerns about the safety of workers and the need for adherence to industry standards. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) fined Circle Health Group, the company responsible for operating the clinic, after three workers suffered from chlorine gas exposure. On 11th March 2021, Anthony Coombes, an engineer working at The Hampshire Clinic, was exposed to chlorine gas while attempting to adjust the pH levels in the clinic's hydrotherapy pool. Due to the lack of trained employees for pool plant operation and inadequate training for Mr. Coombes in chlorine dosing operations and chemical storage, an incorrect chemical reaction occurred. By adding sodium hydrogen sulphate to the pool's sodium hypochlorite tank, chlorine gas was inadvertently released.
Chlorine gas exposure can be fatal within minutes, making the situation extremely dangerous. Mr. Coombes, along with two other workers at The Hampshire Clinic, required medical attention after being exposed to the gas. The HSE's Science Division analysis revealed that the volume of chlorine gas produced was alarmingly over the workplace exposure limit (WEL) and the Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDHL) limit.
